Report on Conscientization Programme : Awareness on Basic First Aid among Students @ NSMGHS Kottiyam

Topic: Awareness on Basic First-aid

Conducted on: 27th November 2020

INTRODUCTION

Conscientization is the process of developing a critical awareness of one's social reality through reflection and action. This popular educational and social concept was developed by Brazilian educational theorist Paulo Freire. It includes taking action against the oppressive elements in one's life that are illuminated by understanding.

As part of our B.Ed. the curriculum we have to organize a conscientization programme during my teaching practice in the school Nithya Sahaya Matha Girls School (NSMGHS) Kottiyam in Kollam. The programme was conducted on the topic "Awareness on Basic First Aid among Students" on 27th November 2020 through face-to-face online teaching platforms.

NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE

First-aid is the emergency care given to an injured person. The purpose of giving first-aid is to minimize injury and future disability. In serious cases, first-aid may be necessary to keep the victim alive.

Teachers and students with good knowledge of first-aid are likely to be more alert and active. First-aid promotes a sense of safety. It makes them capable of managing incidents and assessing casualties.

OBJECTIVES

    1. To provide knowledge about basic first aid.
    2. To give detailed knowledge about various medical emergencies and ways to handle them.

PROCEDURE

The programme was conducted in face-to-face online mode due to restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic situation. The details of the first-aid were presented using multimedia presentations. Texts, images, and videos were useful for the effective transaction of the content.

Medical emergencies related to school-age children were given more importance in the presentations. They were taught how to handle wounds, broken bones, fractures, minor and serious burns, sunstroke, snake bite, and dog bite. A summary of each topic was given after presenting slides and videos.

Following are the images and screenshots of the videos, slides and images presented during the consientization programme:

IMPACT OF THE PROGRAMME

The awareness programme was found to be effective. Students got clarity on how to avoid being panic in emergency situations. They are taught about the do's and don't's during health emergencies. The use of videos was helpful for them to have a better understanding of first-aids. They are also advised to avoid tips found on social networking platforms but to follow reliable sources of information such as hospital organizations, government health institutions, etc.

CONCLUSION

The programme was found to be effective. It provided the students a sense of safety. Students became confident in their skills and abilities in relation to basic first aid administration. They became interested in attending first-aid training. Thus the programme became a successful one.
